California Trip Last Day
This has been a really grueling trip. I think I really overdid the schedule, but I have loved every minute of it. Today was very interesting.
First stop was SCHRAMSBERG, California sparkling wine. We were on a special trade tour with three of the people from the French Laundry! The tour was truly first class and I urge anybody interested in bubbly to go on this tour. The facility is beautiful and the caves are magnificent. The tour staff is as professional as I have seen anywhere. The bubbly is absolutely first rate. We tasted through the entire range. This is my opinion…..at $35-$40 the Brut, Blanc de Blanc, and Blanc de Noir are absolutely worth the price. At $100 per bottle the reserves are NOT worth the price. Get this straight, the reserves are exceptional, but are they better than Ruinart or Pol Roger Rich or Pure, I think not. At $65-$75 I think they would interest me.
We went to lunch at the Silverado Brewery. Exellent as always, but now I am remembering what I forgot to tell you yesterday. We were at the Rutherford Grill for lunch and Shelley sent back her glass of………..COKE. It seems that a bunch of Valley restaurants are using Coke made in Mexico. It really tasted different. I simply think the whole situation was surrealistic!
Next visit was with Heitz. Went on a tour of this very old and venerable winery. Got to meet David Heitz, and then I did something most of you will think is crazy. I concentrated on tasting their WHITE WINES. I have had Martha’s Vineyard and Bella Oaks many times in the past. The very quiet word on the street in Napa is that David is now making truly exceptional white wine also. Well, he certainly is! If we can get the vintages I tasted , you will soon see both the Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay at around $20. Yes, that is the probable price. These wines are perfect examples of what they should be. I really have my fingers crossed here.
Then came the one and only screw up of the trip. Figures it would be the last visit…….It turns out either I or my wholesaler had double booked us for Palmaz at the same time as Heitz. We chose Heitz as I have always wanted to visit there. So we had time to kill after Heitz. Right across from Benessere is Tudal. I called and asked if we could stop by and Matt Tudal told us to come on by. When we got there we met Matt who was running around frantically as he is getting married this week and so we had to deal with his GM….Douglas Eisele. Duh–had we ever heard of Eisele Vineyards, one of Phelps best wines? OK, so we run into another wine business royal family. He proceeds to tell us that their new winemaker is…..get this…..Kirk Venge…….a close and old friend. I was pleased and shocked. We went there because we carry their Pinot Noir at MILLS. I didn’t know that they only produced 78 cases of this wine and that 8 were set aside for the wedding. How did we ever get any?
I was impressed with the wines and hope to be able to get some more of the Tudal wines for Mills at some point this Fall.
See you all back at MILLS on Friday!
Peter
