Today at work we had a long conversation on the sad state of the modern bar. I don’t mean the bar you go to after work or to watch the game; I mean the bar connected to your kitchen, dining room, or den. Our grandfather’s and father’s generations respected the bar. A well stocked bar was requisite in any good home. And equally important, people knew how to make cocktails. Sadly, this is no longer the case. We live in the time of flavored vodkas and pre-mixed drinks. While these have their place, we can do better.
This year, I’ve made it my resolution to drink better wine, but I think I need to add something – build a better bar. It doesn’t have to happen all at once; stock your cabinets with one staple at a time. Find the right vodka, a good gin, really get to know your whiskeys. Moreover, I think every month you should learn to make a drink that doesn’t go by the name “liquor and mixer”. This is the year we should cut our own limes, muddle our own mint, and use our own shaker. Cut out the bar from your weekly budget by starting one. Believe me, this won’t kill your social life; if anything you’ll throw more parties and attend better ones.
Come down to Mills, we’re ready to work with you and find out what you like and what you need to have a bar worthy of your father and grandfather’s respect.

Some thoughts on Bennett Lane’s Maximus Chocolate Wine Sauce. This came into the store today and as a chocolate lover, I had to try it. I ran hot water over the neck of the bottle as it suggested to warm the sauce before drizzling it over some vanilla bean ice cream. The first flavor I got from the sauce was a deep cocoa but dry, almost like a chocolate bar. Then the wine infusion hit and I started to taste the rich merlot.
This is a very full sauce, which I think benefits from the vanilla but I’m very interested in trying it with more dishes soon.

Today is one of those great days where you want to pretend it’s still summer. There are people rowing on the water and I’m even seeing some short sleeves as people walk by.
Summer drinks are almost out of season, but not quite. I’d still love to sit out on the lawn with a bottle of beer waiting for the grill to warm up. But, I think I’m also a bit more likely to enjoy brisk weather than many.
Instead of the grill tonight, we’re trying a gluten free pizza recipe that should be excellent. A perfect sort of night to start with a good red wine. After that, I think that it’s going to be some kind of cocktail while we sit down and talk about Kant. Yes, it’s that kind of night.

Here are Cheryl’s notes on the Women and Wine Tuesday Tasting.
Wow! We’re tasting these malbecs and they are delicious! The Felino malbec from Argentina is big and has opened up beautifully over the past hour. Big ripe fruit and lingering finish. The Montes from Chile is also good, a bit more tannic with more tart fruit. The Cuvee Maurin from Cahors is the lightest of these malbecs.
